In an epic battle, Juan Manuel Marquez revived the Mexican independence day with a thrilling 11th round TKO over Joel Casamayor.

Casamayor was man enough to say “He caught me when I was in the air, that’s all it was,” he said – but the quiet and unassuming Marquez made a very loud point Saturday.

The road to supremacy is going to run through him.

He claimed the Ring Magazine lightweight belt with an 11th-round TKO of Casamayor, becoming the first man to stop the 1992 Olympic gold medalist.

As you all know Juan Manuel Marquez last outing was for the WBC Super Featherweight championship against Manny Pacquiao wherein he lost via close split decision.

Marquez went down once on that fight and that should make the difference on that lost fight.

Predictions: Marquez vs Casamayor

Joel Casamayor is the true champion of boxing's lightweight division, recognized as the title holder by Ring Magazine, even though he doesn't own the belts of any of boxing's four major sanctioning bodies.

But he's a champion not many people believe in. As he prepares to fight Juan Manuel Marquez Saturday night in one of the biggest fights of the year, Casamayor is going into the fight a heavy underdog. These are the odds at Bodog:

Juan Manuel Marquez: -325
Joel Casamayor: +250

You don't often see a generally recognized champion like Casamayor head into a fight as a huge underdog like that, but in this case I think it's warranted. Marquez, moving up to 135 pounds after fighting for years at 125 or 130, is a faster, more skilled boxer than Casamayor, and I'll be surprised if he doesn't come away from the fight as the new lightweight champ.

Former WBC super featherweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez goes to lightweight to fight Joel Casamayor in a pursuit to follow his favorite rival Manny Pacquiao (WBC Lightweight Champion).

Marquez, considered one of the world's best kilo-for-kilo boxers, will fight as a lightweight for the first time. He lost a narrow split decision to Manny Pacquiao in March, surrendering his WBC super featherweight belt after one of the year's best bouts.

Casamayor, the former Cuban Olympic champion who will turn 37 next month, is unbeaten in his last six fights since losing his WBC lightweight title to Jose Luis Castillo in December 2004. Casamayor beat Michael Katsidis in March, knocking out the previously unbeaten Australian in the 10th round to end an action-filled fight.

The 34-year-old Marquez, a featherweight champion for two years, will move up in weight for the second time in his last four fights partly to keep pace with Pacquiao. The Filipino champion, who says he would welcome the chance to meet Marquez for a third time next year, will make his own lightweight debut against WBC champ David Diaz on Saturday night.
